Red Cross, Red Crescent societies tackle food insecurity in Africa

About 2.25 million people in 15 countries across Africa will benefit from a five-year food security promotion programme launched here Thursday by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.To be financed through an appeal for US$ 43.5 million, the programme seeks to im prove the capacity of national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies so that they can further develop food security strategies that use appropriate technologies, seed banks and soil nutrient management.

In addition, the programme will include micro-finance projects, small-scale irrigation schemes and the establishment of community-based food security monitoring systems.Countries whose national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will take part in this food security initiative are Burkina Faso, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda an d Zambia.
